Model U.N.
What is Model UN?
Model UN is an educational simulation that provides students with the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of what occurs in an actual United Nations meeting. Student who partake in Model UN are referred to as delegates, and are assigned countries and choose a committee that they will participate on. After being assigned their country, students must assume the views of the country, assess the issues they are provided with, provide a solution or plan, and present their solution/plan at the conference. The committees for the 2015-2016 school year include UNSC United Nations Security Council, UNSC Hist. United Nations Security Council- Historic, DISEC General Assembly First Committee, UNEP United Nations Environment Program, SOCHUM Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee.

Thoughts from the Delegates...
Rachel Romac
"For me, this was my first year in Model U.N. and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Before the actual competition/conference, I was a little nervous. I wasn't really sure what to expect. I prepared for my topics by really trying to find things that gave me an idea of what my country was like from the inside. I read articles, took a look at Wikipedia (why not), and watched countless YouTube videos on both my country and MUN. When I got to Duquesne and the discussions started, I was a little caught off-guard by the pace of things, but got used to it as it went along. By the end, I had gotten really into the role that everyone was playing and enjoyed every second of it. I am looking forward to doing Model U.N. next year and encourage incoming freshmen and other students to do it, too!" |
